Why Union City Jr.-Sr. High School was nominated

Union City Jr./Sr. High School exemplifies designing and implementing innovative approaches to advance equity and student-centered learning. The leadership team has internally transformed their school day and externally transformed their local ecosystem to ensure that all their students, particularly Hispanic, EL, and low-income students, are able to thrive in school and in life. Internally, leadership redesigned their school week to include Workforce Wednesday, a day each week dedicated to project-based learning in partnership with local industry. Projects include 2 different student-run businesses that are housed at Vision Corner, a nonprofit learning space on Main Street in Union City. Vision Corner not only offers space for the student run businesses, but also has state of the art classroom spaces for the Nursing Pathway that Union City Jr./Sr. High School has developed in partnership with Ivy Tech and Reid Health, the largest regional healthcare employer. In addition, Union City is part of RAZ-32, an innovative collaborative between school districts, higher education and industry partners in the region, dedicated to sharing career pathways to ensure that small rural districts are not hampered by limited economies of scale, staff, or other resources. Because of Workforce Wednesday, Vision Corner and RAZ-32, students in Union City have choice and opportunity far beyond what a traditional small, rural high school could provide due to the commitment of leadership to transformation and innovation.
