Why Hawaii Technology Academy Kona was nominated

HTA Kona takes a holistic approach to learning, balancing both indigenous cultural practices and ‘ike (knowledge) with the 21st century skills surrounding us every day. Students still learn the content and skills necessary to thrive at college or in the workforce by integrating culture and island ways of connecting. Students interact with the wahi pana, or sacred places, and the school creates sustainable, reciprocal partnerships in the private and public sectors. Cultural practitioners share their ‘ike with students and engage them in hands-on practice, problem-solving, and solution-oriented outcomes to increase the wellbeing of the whole kaiāulu (community). Their new campus has been specially designed and built for doing school differently, with everything from a fully equipped science lab to a Makerspace with 3D printing.
